International success for graduates
23rd Dec 2009

RACE graduates have been flying the flag around the globe in recent weeks with notable successes achieved in locations as diverse as West Virginia, New Orleans, Mumbai and Abu Dhabi.

James Graham (grad. 1995) has been enjoying a great season in America and he became the first jockey to ride four winners on the same card this season at Fairgrounds racecourse, New Orleans on December 7th.

Across the Mid-West, Dean Mernagh (grad. 1995) who recently moved to the States from England, rode two winners from three rides on December 12th at Mountaineer Race Track, West Virginia.

Meanwhile on the Indian sub-continent, Chris Hayes & Rory Cleary have been making their mark in Mumbai. Hayes (grad. 2004) had already won the Grade 2 Golconda 1000 Guineas at Hyderabad in early December and added the Tote Turf Sprint Million at Mumbai on December 13th. He followed up by riding a double on Indian 2000 Guineas day (December 20th) when visiting jockeys enjoyed a field day on a 12-race card. Among the other Irish jockeys to have winners on the day was Rory Cleary (grad. 2003) who was tasting success on Indian soil for the first time.

In the Emirates, Wayne Smith (grad.1987) had a notable win in the Listed President Cup run at Abu Dhabi over seven furlongs on 27th December. His mount Seeking The Gold, trained by Musabah Al Muhairi, had three quarters of a length to spare over Kalahari Gold ridden by fellow graduate Tadhg O'Shea (grad. 1998).
