Education Day at the Curragh
6th Jul 2009

More than 300 primary school students from the Newbridge area enjoyed a behind the scenes tour of the Curragh racecourse on 10th and 11th March when RACE were involved in presenting an ‘Education Day' to the young pupils and their teachers.

Devised as part of the build up to the 24th Newbridge Parishes Race Day, which takes place on Sunday 5th April, the schoolchildren learned all about the training of horses for the racetrack, the life of a jockey, the preparation of the track and the procedures on race day. Helen O'Sullivan led the team from RACE which included instructors, racehorse simulator and current trainees plus jockeys' valet Helen Danaher who provided a fascinating insight into the routine of the weighing room. The students will now take part in an essay competition to write about their visit, with prizes sponsored by Newbridge Credit Union.

Curragh commercial manager Evan Arkwright was delighted with the success of the initiative: “Many of the children had never been to the racecourse and we were pleased to have the opportunity to highlight the international significance of the Curragh as one of the world's leading horseracing venues while also promoting the successes of Curragh-based horses, trainers and jockeys who have represented their country all over the world”.
