First winner for Frankie
It proved a memorable Christmas for Frankie Lawlor (grad. 2008) from Ballitore, Co. Kildare, who took his chance at Down Royal on 27th December to grab his first winner on the track for his local trainer Francis Flood.
The 18-year-old conditional jockey, with not much more than a dozen rides to his name, benefitted from the postponement of racing on St Stephen’s Day when substituting for Barry Cash who was booked to ride elsewhere. Lawlor duly took advantage of this opportunity by guiding home Miss Pepperpot with a fine effort in the opening maiden hurdle. He produced the mare with a well-timed run, hitting the front after clearing the last flight and the pair went on to score by half a length from the Equaliser. Hopefully there will be many more winners to come from this talented young rider.
