David Kenny wins Hands and Heels series
David Kenny (grad. 2005) was crowned winner of the latest UK Hands And Heels apprentice series following the final race of the series at Doncaster last Friday 23rd October. 20-year-old Kenny from Castlegar, Co. Galway signed on with Pat Flynn shortly after graduating from RACE. He had his first winner at Down Royal in September 2006 on only his ninth ride but subsequently drifted away from racing to pursue another trade. However his career was re-ignited when he moved to England and resumed his apprenticeship under Reg Hollinshead. The Hands and Heels Series is specifically designed to assist in the education and training of young jockeys and the 12-race series commenced at Southwell last April. In addition to the most win and place points, additional skills points are awarded by designated jockey coaches for overall professional conduct by the riders. Kenny had been topping the standings since June but entered the final race just four points ahead of his nearest rival Debra England and his sixth place finish was enough to seal the title. Jockey coach Jimmy Bleasdale, who has assessed the apprentices throughout the competition, said: "David is a deserving winner. He has displayed improved race-riding skills and a very professional attitude."
