Fanning wins Million at Curragh
Joe Fanning (grad. 1986) starred on Irelands richest days racing of the year when he partnered Shakespearean to victory in the Goffs Million Mile at the Curragh on 27th September. The Roundwood, Co. Wicklow born jockey just held off Marfach and a host of other challengers by a rapidly diminishing short head to grab the first prize of one million euro for trainer Mark Johnston who experienced “the best five minutes of my life” as another horse of his won a Group One race in Germany within minutes of this Curragh victory. Fanning, who fractured his collarbone in a fall at Ayr in June, has been enjoying a tremendous season on the track with two victories at Royal Ascot augmented by this big pay day and he is in course to beat his career best total of 108 winners in a season.
